Example Course Plan
Hispanic Studies Course Plan (first 3 semesters)
This is an example course plan based on the 2022-2023 University Catalog; your actual
schedule may deviate from this example. Your faculty advisor will work with you to
select appropriate courses.
As an 91ÁÔÆæ student, it is your responsibility to track your progress each semester
towards completing graduation requirements using the degree audit tool.
Fall Semester
Choose one of the following depending on language placement scores:
- SPAN 201 Intermediate Spanish (LA)
- SPAN 203 Spanish as a World Language (G)
- SPAN 334 Cultures of the Spanish-speaking Caribbean World (CHC, G)
In addition take:
Spring Semester
Choose one of the following:
- SPAN 250 Business Spanish in its Cultural Context (G)
- SPAN 303 Communicating Across Cultures in the Spanish-speaking World
- SPAN 307 Reading and Writing Culture (W, G)
In addition take:
- General Education Course (or Gateway if not completed in the Fall)
- General Education Course
- General Education Course
- Physical Education (PEY)
May Term & Summer Term
- Optional
Fall Semester
- Any SPAN course at the 200 or 300 level

Study Abroad
- A study abroad experience in a Spanish-speaking country is highly recommended for Hispanic Studies majors and minors.
- Visit the Study Abroad Office and discuss options with your academic advisor.
Additional Information
- If an entering Spanish major does not place out of the basic sequence, then they must complete the basic sequence before taking other 200 or 300 level courses in Spanish.
- SPAN 203 is an excellent starting point as it is the prerequisite for most 300 level courses in Spanish.
- Students planning to double major in Hispanic Studies and Secondary Education should also follow the Hispanic Studies/Secondary Education Course Plan.
